The QR series of rotary encoders enable contact-free measurement of an angular displacement from 0° to 360° without a mechanical stop. Two types of housing are available. The QR30 housing, where the sensor and magnet are mounted separately from each other, and the QR40 housing, where the magnet is integrated into the rotating shaft in the housing.
In the QR30 range, the sensor and magnet are mounted separately from each other, where the customer can mount the supplied magnet on its rotating axle (on-axis). The maximum distance of 3 mm between the magnet and the sensor provides sufficient space for mechanical tolerances under extreme conditions. Various outputs are available with a 10 or 12-bit resolution for a wide range of applications. While the back of the QR30 sensors is being sensitive, the QR30N sensors have got a sensitive nose.
"Absolute" vs. "incremental"
The QR30 series is available as absolute or incremental rotary encoders. An absolute rotary encoder contains an analog output which is linear with the angle of rotation, up to 360°. After switching on the power the sensor knows directly in which position it is located.
An incremental encoder is specially suitable for rotational velocity of a shaft. The output of the sensor consists of pulses (A and B). The number of pulses per revolution can be between 32 and 1024. On the basis of the phase shift between the A and B signal can be determined if the shaft rotates clockwise or counterclockwise.
In contrast to the QR30 series, in the QR40 series of rotary encoders the magnet is built into the sensor. The standard shaft is D-shaped. The QR40 also has a zero-input, which makes it possible to zero the device after installation, ensuring a non-critical mounting procedure.

The rotary encoder housing
Many of the DIS sensors in the QR-series use a unique universal plastic housing concept, known as QUADRO®. The advantage is the very compact size, simple installation and the fact that the electronics are fully sealed which provides a high degree of ingress protection (IP67 for QR30 & QR30N and IP66 for QR40).
